1st graders are learning about folktales. So far, we have read a folktale from Liberia (Two Ways to Count to Ten), Japan (The Empty Pot), Israel (Something from Nothing), and Peru (The Great Flood). This week students discovered where these places are by using a world map.

The week before December vacation, students in 1st and 2nd grade also got to design with legos. We read the book "Iggy Peck Architect" (a brand new book in our library) and then created a building or a bridge like the main character in the story. Students used the Super 3 to plan, create, and evaluate their designs. This was a great intro to the Super 3 model, which we will use for research projects later in the year.
The library also has a low tech maker center where students can be innovative and collaborate together to improve their own designs. The students below made bags, wallets, and flowers by just using duck tape and recycled catalog paper. Students can also design objects with legos. They share what they have created with the whole class after two months of careful planning, creating, and editing.
The library received a makey makey kit and little bits kit through donations from donorschoose.org. Students in 3rd-6th grade have been using these kits during their library center time (the last 10-15 minutes of each class). The makey makey kit allows students to use objects that conduct electricity as their keyboard. Little Bits allow students to create their own circuits. Thank you to everyone who donated to this project!!!
Students in all grades tried computer progamming by using free tutorials on code.org. Some classes even tried programming our library robot named Dash through a maze! Thank you for all the volunteers for helping to make this event successful! Congrats to Hayden in 1st grade for winning the Amazon Fire Tablet raffle!
